1. Strengthen your core muscles – The benefits of having a strong core or strong abdominal muscles go beyond aesthetics and looking good — you also feel good because in part you’re taking away pressure on your lower back. In other words, a strong core provides support to the spine. There are many exercises you can do to strengthen your core. What’s important is your posture while doing the exercises says Dr Karl Jawhari. If you do the exercises wrong, you can put yourself and your spine at risk.
2. Wear proper shoes – Did you know that the type of shoes you wear plays a part in supporting the spine? Proper shoes are not only for your feet but also for the spine as they provide ample support to help keep your spine aligned. This is why some shoes are designed and marketed to provide balance and support. If you are already experiencing back pain, it’s even more important to wear proper shoes. When you wear the wrong shoes, it affects your gait which can create stress on your back, explains Dr Karl Jawhari.
3. Avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time – If you have an office job where you’re chained to your desk for eight hours a day or more, try to get up from your seat as many times as possible during the day to provide your back with some relief. You may find that the longer you sit, the more you’re hunched over your desk or staring at the computer screen. This is why an ergonomic chair and proper posture go hand in hand to protect your back from the damage sitting down causes.
4. Sleep on a comfortable mattress – After a long day’s work, many of us look forward to lying down and getting some rest but your choice of mattress and pillows can also affect your spine, says Dr Karl Jawhari. While part of it is based on preference, there are general reminders to note. For instance, if the mattress is five to seven years old, it may be time to get a replacement.
